THE NEW LIBERTY
ART MUSEUM (Under Construction) POST
EMERGENCY SHELTER (Under Construction) POST
COMMUNITY LIBRARY POST
As we began to see that our ideas for new social forms were viable, and that we needed a place to meet, we began discussing the feasibility of constructing a building that would serve many functions:
A point of contact with the existing community
The auditorium will soon be available for community functions and events. The recreation/gym/pool area, library, audio/video room, concert hall, are all accessible to everyone, and cultural events such as plays, concerts, and talent shows will be regularly scheduled.
A town-forum meeting place
A community emergency shelter
This building project was paid for completely by donations and subscriptions, all funds collected before construction began. Maintenance and miscellaneous expenses are expected to be covered by the rental fees and continued donations from those who use the facilities.
The earth formed method of construction and energy saving (and producing!) design of our new building has allowed us to obtain a great deal of floor space for the relatively small amount invested. We even saved money sharing our muscle power together molding the structure, shoveling earth and concrete. Our work parties truly were work, but also parties. We had fun - - - and certainly got some good exercise in the process!
We are especially proud of the low maintenance costs features of the structure. We expect to be using one of the first buildings of this size to be totally free of all heating and cooling bills, year in and year out. The water system, and waste disposal systems might well be models for many other buildings yet to be built. The electrical power generated by this building for it's own needs is truly icing on the cake.
Structurally, the domed shape offers unequaled protection from natural forces of wind, earthquake, and fire. The building is designed to temporarily shelter several hundred persons for short periods in emergency situations, and a model for similar multi-purpose shelters worldwide. You can understand our excitement for being the first to enjoy and use it's generous spaces and utility.
From here, we are able to meet together and plan our future activities. More people hear of our movement, and the locals participate as they find aspects that fit in to their own lives and goals. Being a voluntary joint effort of many individuals, our purpose is strictly educational, and the services free to all. Voluntary contributions, in many forms, are accepted, according to ability and desire.
